She had recently gone through the manuscript of a biography based  on the life  of her mother, Alma Spreckels, of the sugar family, a dominant figure in San Francisco society in the early decades of the century. “Those other people,” the 50 percent she was talking about, referred to what is most commonly called “the Jewish thing,” about which no one likes to commit himself, although it is a constant in conversation.
