In community-based participatory action research, the data collection process evolves into an intertwined spiral phase (Fig.1). In the initial stage, we engaged with stakeholders, held town hall meetings, introduced the research agenda, and designed focus group questions collaboratively with stakeholders, which took one week to complete.
Healthcare professionals must refrain from using their position of authority or the vulnerability of patients to influence their spiritual beliefs. Most of this research has focused on depression, suicidality and substance use, and several studies have reported promising results with regard to post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, and anxiety. Fewer studies have examined the relationship between S/R and obsessive-compulsive disorder or eating disorders. Thus, there remain many gaps in the literature that need filling in this particular area.

You tend to attract people who need “fixing” but often get trapped in self-sacrificing roles. You have a history of healers in the family, e.g., nurses, psychologists, massage therapists, doctors, counselors, etc. Instead, as children, we were taken to GPs, physicians, and doctors who prescribed us medications and other allopathic medicines. Unfortunately, this has led to a large percentage of us losing touch with traditional forms of healing. The media is designed to feed you stories that keep you hooked on an emotional level.
For many, the journey to emotional health includes addressing both mind and soul. While not necessary, a mentor or guide can offer support and insight, especially when you’re just starting or looking to deepen your practice. Tracking your spiritual progress can be both motivating and insightful, helping you to see how far you’ve come and understand the impact of your practices on your overall well-being. Being part of a community can amplify your practice and provide support and inspiration.
We don’t have to hear it from anyone else, though teachers help by reminding us of what we’re discovering inside. When I first learned meditation and other practices in the Buddhist tradition, which came out of a monastic setting, they were about sitting on the cushion, closing your eyes, and being with yourself. And yoga was something you did with other people, but it wasn’t about relationships. There are old clichés about navel-gazing, and how contemplative practices cut you off from the world and others rather than connect you. Well, the truth is, some practices done in silence, like meditation, do leave you by yourself, even in a room with others. Through spiritual practice, though, you begin to recognize how you are interconnected with everything, including other people.
